Can Tho City Steps Up Green Energy Development
Can Tho is seeking to strengthen its role as a major energy hub in the Mekong Delta by proposing 19 new power generation projects with a combined capacity of 42,175 MW for inclusion in Viet Nam’s revised National Power Development Plan VIII.
The city currently has 57 power projects included in the revised plan, with a total planned capacity of 12,192.7 MW. The proposed additions would significantly expand its power generation capacity and create new opportunities for energy development.
With its strategic location in the Mekong Delta and potential for renewable energy, Can Tho aims to diversify its energy sources while supporting regional economic growth. Green energy development is expected to play an important role in meeting rising electricity demand, improving energy security and promoting sustainable development.
The city’s plans also align with Viet Nam’s broader efforts to accelerate the energy transition and increase the share of clean energy in its power mix. Developing new power generation projects, particularly those using renewable sources, could help attract investment, create jobs and support the growth of local industries.
Through these initiatives, Can Tho hopes to strengthen its position in the regional energy sector and contribute to the Mekong Delta’s long-term economic development.
