The name Tuan Chau is a combination of two words mandarin governing a district during the feudal linh tuan (patrolman) and tri chau (the period). This name originated from the fact that during feudal times, there was a sentry station on the island whose job was to patrol and protect the sea and the surrounding island area. This station was under the management of a tri chau.

Up until 1999, Tuan Chau was still an undeveloped island commune with a rudimentary infrastructure. Islanders engaged in fishing with the most basic of tools. The cultural and spiritual life of the people was therefore very poor. Right after the construction of the road connecting Tuan Chau Island with the mainland was completed, local living improved rapidly.

Connected both by river and road, the Tuan Chau Pearl Island now is located in a favorable position. Sitting northwest of Ha Long Bay, Tuan Chau Island is a mere 2km away from Highway No. 18A which links the economic triangle of Hanoi - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh. It takes about two hours to get there by boat from Mong Cai and three by road, and just one hour from Hai Phong.

With beautiful natural sceneries, white sand beach, and emerald-colored water, Tuan Chau is an ideal destination for vacations and has five-star resorts, luxury hotels, and a large entertainment area.
