Women’s masters taste first loss, men win at Chess Olympiad

Hanoi, September 10 (VNA) - Vietnamese women suffered their first defeat at the Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaizan on September 9.


Vietnam lost 1-3 to Poland, with only Women’s Grandmaster Hoang Thi Bao Tram winning against Zawadzka Jolanta.


After six matches, Vietnam have eight points and rank 24 out of 140 teams.


They will next play Turkey, who are ranked in 25th place after losing 0.5-3.5 to the United States.


On the men’s side, the Vietnamese defeated South Africa 3-1.


GM Le Quang Liem and FIDE master Nguyen Anh Khoi pocketed victories, while GMs Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy tied with their opponents.


With their fourth win, Vietnam have jumped to the 37th position among 150 participating squads.


They will play Bosnia & Herzegovina, ranked No 39, in the next round.
