Vina Samex promotes Vietnamese forest specialties

With major efforts to conserve and develop cinnamon and star anise, Vina Samex has introduced the two forest specialties of Vietnam to the world.
For the Tay, Dao and Nung people in the northwest, Vina Samex is a great help encouraging and supporting them to grow cinnamon and star anise. It is now generating the biggest source of income for ethnic people in Lao Cai, Yen Bai and Lang Son provinces.

- Vina Samex is set to build the first cinnamon and aniseed museum in Vietnam and Southeast Asia by 2025.
- Vina Samex has a cinnamon and aniseed farm of 1,000 hectares in the northwestern provinces of Lao Cai, Lang Son, Thai Nguyen and Yen Bai provinces, generating jobs for 15,000 households.
Vina Samex General Director Nguyen Thi Huyen said the ethnic people’s determination to join the company in developing cinnamon and star anise in the northern mountainous region has inspired Vina Samex to make these Vietnamese specialties known to the world.

“When we marketed Vietnamese cinnamon and aniseed oil at international fairs, foreign partners were very impressed with their quality, encouraging us to invest in these forest products,” said Chairman of Vina Samex’s Board of Directors, Que Anh.

Vina Samex is exporting to the EU and the US cinnamon and anise products at 9,000 US dollars/ton of cinnamon and 6,000 US dollars/ton of star anise. The exports include cinnamon powder, branch cinnamon, cinnamon cut in round, square and rolled shapes, and aniseed powder.

The company has a cinnamon and aniseed farm and a processing plant in Yen Bai plant. The plant’s system of drying furnaces, worth over 100 billion dong (roughly 44,000 US dollars), is the biggest in Vietnam with an annual capacity of 2,000 tons. The monthly exports are around 400 tons of aniseed and 500 tons of cinnamon.

Recently, two experts from the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) in the Netherlands, Sureel Singh and Simona D’amico, visited Vina Samex’s plant in Yen Bai province to verify the company’s eligibility for inclusion in global ethical enterprises. Vina Samex has fully met the eligibility criteria, including exporting organic products, being a biodiversity conservation enterprise, generating jobs for locals and making contributions to developing clean agricultural production.
