Vietnam, US enhance cooperation in wildlife protection

Hanoi, July 1 (VNA) – Vietnam and the US will work closely to fight illegal wildlife trading, according to Secretary of the US Department of the Interior Sally Jewell.

During a meeting with the media in Hanoi on June 30, part of activities during her visit to Vietnam from June 29-July 1, she called for enhanced law enforcement and international cooperation in dealing with the increased smuggling of endangered species including elephants, rhinos, sea turtles, tigers and pangolins.

The Secretary stressed the need for publicity campaigns to raise awareness across the world, such as her country’s destruction of one tonne of elephant tusks in Times Square in New York among events with celebrity participation.

She also hailed the contributions Vietnam and the US have made to the joint efforts reflected by the respective legal frameworks and enforcement of wildlife laws.

During her stay, Secretary Jewell is scheduled to visit the Cuc Phuong National Park in the northern province of Ninh Binh and other centres for protecting endangered species.
