Moscow, April 17 (VNA) –Vietnam supports the expanded and increased role of the United Nations (UN) and multilateral security mechanisms in ensuring regional and global security, peace, and stability, said Deputy Chief of Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army Vo Van Tuan at the fourth Moscow Conference on International Security (MCIS) in the Russian capital city on April 16-17.
At a discussion on the role of political-military policies in regional and global security, Lieutenant General Tuan said growing non-traditional security challenges are threatening security and stability unsolvable by any one nation alone.
Political-military strategies are essential to mitigate disagreements and conflicts and promote cooperation in addressing shared security matters, he added.
The use of military interference needs approval through the UN and the international community. Vietnam adamantly protests unilateral military interference in sovereign nations under any pretense, the officer stressed.
At the annual conference, participants also discussed international defence cooperation in the fight against terrorism, the current situation in Afghanistan, and measures to combat the self-proclaimed Islamic State.
The event drew the special attention of the public and the participation of senior Russian officials, including Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and General Valery Gerasimov – Chief of the General Staff of Russia’s Armed Forces and First Deputy Defence Minister.
At the MCIS’s plenary session in the morning of April 16, speeches from the Russian delegates analysed imminent threats to global security and proposed possible cooperation areas to cope with these risks.
The Defence Ministers of participating countries—Belarus, Greek, China, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Pakistan, and Iran—also spoke at the session.
