Vietnam, Laos’ local Red Cross organisations forge links

Hanoi, September 12 (VNA)- Red Cross societies in the border localities of Vietnam and Laos have signed cooperation agreements for the 2014-2018 period as part of the bilateral agreement reached between the two national Red Cross organisations in November last year.

The Vietnamese localities included the northern mountainous provinces of Son La and Dien Bien, and the central provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Nam.

They were linked with the Lao provinces of Phongsali, Luang Prabang, Huoaphanh, Xiengkhuoang, Bolikhamxay, Khammuane, Savannakhet, Saravane, Sekong and Attapeu.

According to the documents signed on September 11 in Hanoi, the localities will work together closely on humanitarian affairs, providing emergency aid, conducting medical examinations and check-ups, and developing effective models for carrying out humanitarian activities.

They also agreed to promote an annual exchange of delegations and openly share all relevant information in the future.

The consensus between the local Red Cross organisations would reinforce the solidarity and special friendship between the two Parties, States and their people, Vietnam Red Cross (VNRC) President Nguyen Hai Duong said.

As part of the agreement between the two national Red Cross societies, the VNRC organised a training course for 20 Laos Red Cross (LRC) workers in Hanoi from August 19-September 11, with the objective of learning from each other’s experience in implementing humanitarian activities.

During the course, the Lao trainees discussed human resources development, communications, humanitarian diplomacy, and disaster prevention and adaptation with their Vietnamese counterparts.
