Vietnam hopes to enhance defence ties with Cuba: Official

Defence Deputy Minister, Sen. Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh has affirmed that Vietnam hopes to step up defence relations with Cuba as cooperation in this field is an important pillar in the bilateral ties.

Meeting with First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, General Raul Castro in Havana on May 8, Vinh firther said that the bilateral defence ties have been bolstered in a practical manner over the past time, contributing to regional and global peace as well as improving defence capacity in each nation.

The cooperation has been intensified in various sectors like military education-training, military healthcare, and defence industry, he stressed, adding that both defence ministries are implementing a dossier on the 60-year history of Vietnam-Cuba defence partnership to popularise the friendship and solidarity between the two countries and defence ministries in particular.

Raul, for his part, spoke highly of the bilateral defence collaboration, recommending that both sides further cooperation to better their defence capacity, helping safeguard peace and build prosperous nations.

He said he strongly supports the establishment of a dossier highlighting Vietnam-Cuba defence ties in the past six decades.

Vinh was leading a delegation of the Defence Ministry to make an official visit to Cuba from May 4-8. On May 6, the Vietnamese delegation had a defence policy dialogue with the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba.
