US-DPRK Summit 2019: Russian experts hail Vietnam’s organising role

Russian scholars have lauded Vietnam’s organising the second summit between Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump in Hanoi on February 27-28.

Director of the Russian Strategy for Asia Center of the Institute of Economics at Russia’s Academy of Sciences Prof. Georgy Toloraya said Vietnam’s organisation of the summit has been perfect.

Through this summit, Vietnam has managed to elevate its position in the region as a responsible nation and proved that it could pull off holding such an event, he added.

Meanwhile, Grigory Trofimchuk, head of the expert council of the Eurasian Ideas Foundation, said Vietnam hosted the summit with excellent quality, showing the country’s prestige in international politics has been consolidated when Vietnam has engaged in significant geo-political orientations and contributed to ensuring security in Asia.

Vietnam has been trusted by the world in important issues such as nuclear disarmament and has become one of the key factors in bolstering trust in the world, he stressed.

On the summit’s outcomes, Prof. Toloraya expressed his surprise as the summit came to no agreement.

It’s a regret that this opportunity has been wasted and the certainty of a third summit is still up in the air, stated Prof. Toloraya.

He emphasised the fact that the two sides have not been critical of each other and President Trump remains optimistic of another summit and respectful of the DPRK leader.
