Vietnam fulfilled its duties as a non-permanent UNSC member in the first year of its membership, including holding the UNSC Presidency for the first time in January 2020.
For the second time in its role as UNSC President, Vietnam has promoted three priorities. These include, fostering ties between the United Nations (UN) and regional organizations to promote trust-building and dialogue in preventing and settling disputes . This is the continuation of Vietnam’s efforts since the beginning of its tenure. For this issue, a high-level open debate was held on April 19 with the attendance of The UN Secretary-General, leaders of ASEAN, the European Union (EU), and the African Union (AU).
The second priority Vietnam focused on was settling bomb and landmine consequences and maintaining sustainable peace. For the issue, Vietnam held a ministerial-level meeting chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 8. The UN Secretary-General attended the event with special guests, including a representative from the all-female landmine clearance team in the central province of Quang Tri. Actor Daniel Craig, famed for playing the titular role in the James Bond film series, who is also the UN Ambassador in addressing bomb and mine aftermath, sent a video message to the event.
The third priority Vietnam focused on was the protection of an infrastructure that is crucial for people’s life amid armed conflicts. For this issue, a ministerial meeting was held on April 27 with the participation of the Deputy Secretary-General for humanitarian affairs and leaders of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Organizations.
Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the UN, said that Vietnam entered its UNSC presidency with both advantages and difficulties. Among the numerous challenges are the developments in Myanmar, Syria, Yemen, and Libya, and the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula. Members of the Security Council have to be ready 24/7 to make timely and correct decisions in dealing with emerging issues.
Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy affirmed that Vietnam received great support from members of the Security Council for this term. Recently, the major countries in the council made certain adjustments and improvements, thus creating some advantages for Vietnam.
The priority issues that Vietnam proposed has drawn great attention from the UN Security Council, the UN and other countries. In order to fulfill its role, Vietnam has made efforts to participate actively, proactively and responsibly, ensuring objectivity, transparency, handling differences among member countries, striving to maintain solidarity and using a consensus to solve issues.
