Thailand’s Berli Jucker plans to expand in Vietnam

Bangkok, September 10 (VNA) – Berli Jucker Public Co. Ltd. (BJC), a Thai trading, logistics and retail company, has announced a plan to expand its convenience store chain in Vietnam, another move to strengthen its presence in Vietnam’s retail market.

According to the plan, the company will spend some 1 billion THB (31.1 million USD) to open 205 more B’s Mart stores by 2018, raising the total number of shops in the chain to 300. The first B’s Mart was opened early this year and 95 have become operational so far.

Just last month, BJC acquired German retailer Metro AG’s Cash & Carry chain in Vietnam for 876 million USD and projected to generate profit from this losing business within 3 years.

For the first haft of 2014, BJC posted a turnover of 21.4 billion THB (666.7 million USD), a 2.5 percent year-on-year increase, but its profit dropped by 35 percent due to the economic decline and political unrest in Thailand.
