Sixth National Assembly important to national history

HCM City, January 5 (VNA) – The sixth National Assembly (1976-1981) played an extremely important role in Vietnam’s history, with the ratification of the guidelines to reunify the country’s northern and southern regions.

After Southern Liberation Day (April 30, 1975), Vietnam became a united nation. However, in fact, there were still two Governments existing in tandem – The Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Vietnam.

Therefore, unifying the country emerged as the most pressing task.

Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu, former head of the NA’s Committee for Social Affairs and a NA deputy from the sixth to the 11 th tenure, expressed how important the sixth NA session was.

According to Thu, if the first NA ushered in a period of liberation, the sixth legislature marked the unifications after 30 years of separation due to war.

NA deputies showed their absolute confidence in the Party leadership and the majority of them voted for major decisions on the country’s development, Thu said.

The first session of the sixth NA approved the country’s most important matters, including a resolution on the national name, flag, emblem, anthem, the State organization at a time when there was no new Constitution, and the capital, as well as a decision to rename Sai Gon-Gia Dinh Ho Chi Minh City.

Phan Minh Tanh, who worked as Secretary of the southern NA deputy delegation at that time, said these events were of significant importance to the nation, especially after the country had gone through a fierce struggle for southern liberation and national reunification.

Pham Hoc Lam, who was a NA deputy of northern Ninh Binh province during the fifth tenure and of Minh Hai province (now Ca Mau and Bac Lieu provinces) during the sixth tenure, said the sixth NA testified the absolute confidence in the Party leadership.

The guidelines set by the Party and issues raised by the NA received a high rate of approval from the deputies, he said.

The former NA deputies expressed their honour and pride at the votes of confidence they received from the public.

That confidence gave them the momentum to fulfill their tasks, they said.
