We visited Xuan Duc Martial Arts Club that belongs to Nam Hong Son Martial Arts School in Hanoi on the day when the club organised an exam for disciples to get higher belts. According to the rules of the club, disciples who practice at the club at least one year participate in the contest for a higher belt.
At the exam, the disciples showed typical martial art performances of Nam Hong Son, such as Long ho quyen (dragon tiger form), Thao ma quyen , Phuong vu quyen, Song kiem nu (dual sword form), Quy chau quyen, Tam khuc con (three section staff), and their inner forces such as breaking bricks, Yet hau cong (pharynx gong), Phi long dao or lying on nails and a motorbike drives over the body.
Ly Van Quyen, a disciple of the club, said that he has practiced martial arts at the club for four years and he participated in this contest for the yellow belt. Quyen said that he is interested in this martial arts school because it not only helps him improve his physical strength but also live better as the martial arts school’s motto: “Sanding together with other martial arts schools, do the good and avoid the bad, when the nation needs it, be ready to sacrifice for the country and glorify the martial arts school”.

Through their performances, the disciples show the quintessence and miracles of Nam Hong Son Martial Arts School. Martial arts master Nguyen Ty, head of Nam Hong Son Martial Arts School, said: “I am the son of Nguyen Nguyen To, alias Sau To, who is considered the founder of Nam Hong Son. The name Nam Hong Son has a great meaning. Nam means Vietnamese martial arts and Hong is Thieu Lam Hong Gia and Son refers to a magnificent mountain. Over 80 years of development, Nam Hong Son Martial Arts School has established many prestigious martial arts clubs. He added that he put much hope in Xuan Duc Martial Arts Club because this club has strict discipline and its disciples are teenagers who are the future of the country.
According to Nguyen Xuan Duc, the head of the club, the club has trained over 1,000 disciples. The club always pays much attention to the quality of training so the club does not enroll a large number of disciples. Furthermore, all the club’s disciples are wholeheartedly devoted to preserving and developing the traditional martial arts school and are ready to serve the country when necessary.
