WEF Davos 2019: Consolidating favorable international environment for national development

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s presence at the annual conference of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland from January 22-25, propagated the country’s socio-economic development and international integration achievements in 2018.
His attendance at this important event also delivered Vietnam’s major policies, orientation and measures on socio-economic development in 2019, thus encouraging leading partners and groups to continue intensifying cooperation with Vietnam, and consolidating a favorable international environment for the implementation of the country’s socio-economic development targets this year.

Within the framework of WEF 2019 Davos, Vietnam and WEF signed an agreement on building a center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and a letter of intent on developing initiatives for plastic waste treatment. 
Since joining the WEF in 1989, Vietnam’s relations with the high-profile forum have developed rapidly in various aspects. WEF has become an important dialogue forum for Vietnamese government leaders with their counterparts from nations around the world and leading groups, opening up many investment and development opportunities for the country.

With the theme “Globalization 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” WEF Davos 2019 attracted around 3,000 delegates, including heads of state and government leaders of 50 countries.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc led a Vietnamese high-ranking delegation to attend the forum, and had bilateral and multilateral meetings to foster the international environment for the nation development.

During his stay in Switzerland, Prime Minister Phuc met with executives of leading international groups in finance and infrastructure such as Visa, Generali, Bank Julius Baer and the Development Bank of Japan. He informed them Vietnam enjoyed a GDP growth rate of 7.1% in 2018, the highest level in 10 years. With its macro-economy and monetary market stabilized and inflation curbed, the business and investment environment has improved.

Most of the executives spoke highly of Vietnam economic and financial achievements, indicating that the PM and the Government would continue carrying out measures to stabilize the financial sector and create a better environment for enterprises to maintain their business and invest in the country.

In a meeting with Swiss President Ueli Maurer, PM Phuc said Vietnam attached importance to consolidating and strengthening its ties with Switzerland.

He took the occasion to thank Switzerland for supporting Vietnam’s candidacy for a non-permanent member post in the UN Security Council for the 2020-21 tenure, and for committing an ODA of 90 million US dollars for the country in the 2017-20 period.

Both sides agreed to select suitable projects to effectively use the financial resource, and to coordinate closely at multilateral forums, especially the United Nations, to ensure law, peace, stability and sustainable development in the region and the world.

The WEF 2019’s working agenda covered more than 400 working sessions of leaders of governments, international organizations and enterprises, and leading experts in numerous fields and young people from around the world.
At a meeting with his counterpart from the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, PM Phuc spoke highly of developments in multi-dimensional cooperation between the two countries, especially within the framework of the strategic partnership on adaptation to climate change and water management and the strategic partnership on sustainable agriculture and food security.

He said Vietnam respected the assistance provided by the Netherlands in the areas of environment, education and agriculture, and wanted the Netherlands to continue assisting the country with new programs. He expected the Netherlands to urge the European Union to sign and ratify the EVFTA, and support peace, stability and navigational freedom, security and safety in the East Sea.

PM Phuc and his counterpart from the Czech Republic Andrej Babis shared their delight with growing bilateral ties, saying they would make efforts to push the implementation of signed agreements on economics, trade, culture, education and science. He thanked the Government of the Czech Republic for creating favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community to integrate into the local society and contribute to the country’s development.

He expected that the Czech Republic would continue supporting and boosting the partnership and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and the EU and the signing of the EVFTA. PM Andrej Babis said the Czech Republic was committed to strengthening and developing its traditional friendship and cooperation with Vietnam.
