Vietnamese, Russian legislators discuss cooperation measures

Seoul, June 28 (VNA) – Vietnam wants to continue intensifying cooperation with Russia in defence-security, said National Assembly (NA) Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu.

Luu met with Deputy Speaker of Russia’s State Duma Olga Yepifanova in Seoul, the Republic of Korea, on the sidelines of the second Meeting of Speakers of Eurasian Countries’ Parliaments.

He confirmed that Vietnam prioritises strengthening its comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia, and values the role of the country in Asia-Pacific.

The official hailed the significance of Russia’s efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region, including the East Sea.

Vietnam is willing to boost cooperation between Russia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), while hoping that Russia continues backing ASEAN and Vietnam’s stance in settling disputes in the East Sea by peaceful means on the basis of international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), in strictly implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea and forming a Code of Conduct in the East Sea.

Vietnam also wants Russia to contribute to maintaining peace, stability and aviation and maritime security and safety in the East Sea, for the common interests of the Asia-Pacific region, he added.

He expressed his hope that the two sides will expand oil and gas exploration and exploitation in the continental shelf and the waters of Vietnam in accordance with international law and the UNCLOS.

Olga Yepifanova affirmed that Russia’s legislative body is willing to collaborate with the Vietnamese National Assembly.

She emphasised the importance of expanding bilateral trade and economic cooperation and promoting the role of the legislature in supervising the two countries’ agreements.

She said the two countries’ lawmakers play an important role in narrowing their development gap.

She expressed hope that Vietnam and Russia will intensify cooperation in researching nuclear energy for peaceful purpose.
