Golf was introduced to Vietnam
only about two decades ago, however it has made great progress with many
golf courses being built nationwide which is attracting an increasing
numbers of golfers. At present, there are about one thousand professional
golfers in Vietnam.
T o mark the significant development of
this "aristocratic" sport, the "Carlsberg Master Vietnam 2004" Golf
Tournament was recently held at Chi Linh star golf course by the Asian
Tour with a total prize purse worth USD 200,000.
The tournament attracted 140
professional golfers from many countries in the world, including famous
golfers Corey Pavin (alias a bull) - Champion at the American Open
Tournament, Shiv Kapur (India) - who won two gold medals at Asian Games
2002, Thongchai Jadee (Thailand) - the top in the Asian medal tally of
Asian Tour and Simmon Yaterecond - the second in the Asian medal tally.
Attending the tournament were four Vietnamese golfers, including Nguyen
Thieu Duong, Nguyen Van Thong, Trinh Van Tho and Nguyen The Vinh.
The tournament ended with a big
surprise when Angelo Que (the Philippines), who was ranked 122nd in the
medal tally, defeated the number-one Thongchai Jadee bynbsp; three
strokes.
The success of the first
professional golf tournament helped promote the development of this sport
in Vietnam.nbsp;nbsp;
