Tro Tram Festival

In early spring, the local people in Tu Xa Commune, Lam Thao District, Phu Tho Province are eager to hold the Tro Tram Festival at Tro Temple during lunar January 11-12. It is one of the traditional festivals of people in the midland and the Red River Delta and it reflects the aspirations of the people for a prosperous and happy life.
The main rite of the festival is Mat, also called “Linh tinh tinh phoc”, a spiritual activity of the ancient Viet people who worshipped Linga and Yoni. The Mat rite is held at midnight to highlight the harmony of Yin and Yang.
The festival also consists of the procession of the Rice Genie that aims at praying for good weather and bumper crops. There is also a comedy performance about people in intellectual circles, agriculture, industry and commerce.
The festival not only provides a chance for people to enjoy and share happy moments together in the early New Year but also shows the traditional and spiritual features. It once disappeared during the war years but since 1993 it has been celebrated again. It has become a cultural event of Phu Tho Province that lures thousands of domestic and foreign tourists.
