The "Phach"

Phach (castanets) is a piece in the self-resounding and striking musical set of the Viet people. It is used in a musical band to accompany ca tru (or ceremonial/festival song - an original art performance of academic character) and chau van (ritual song), two genres of folk songs that have attracted great attention from both domestic and foreign scholars.

There are two kinds of phach, one made of old bamboo trees and the other, of hard wood. The bamboo phach is 22 cm long and 5 cm wide, while the wooden phach is 19 cm long.
