At the
14th Asian Junior Athletics
Championship 2010 held in Hanoi, Vietnam, athletes of the host country
obtained great achievements with two silver medals and three bronze
medals. It was a chance for young Vietnamese athletes to gain experience
from strong rivals in the region.

The
tournament attracted the participation of athletes from 31 countries and
territories, including powerful Asian countries in athletics such as
China, Kazakhstan, Qatar, etc. Although most of the athletes who won high
prizes at the tournament were born between 1991-1992, including Barshim
Mutaz Essa (Qatar) and Zhang Guowei (China) in men’s high jump event;
Shibata Haruka (Japan) in women’s 400m hurdles; Lee Yen Lin (Taiwan –
China) in men’s 110m hurdles; Sun Yan (China) in triple jump; and Al
Mannai Mohd.Ahmed RA (Qatar) in men’s decathlon, they reach the
professional levelnbsp; of the leading Asian athletes.
At the
tournament two new Asian records were set, far surpassing the old ones set
by the previous generation. The first one set by Barshim Mutaz Essa
(Qatar) in high jump with the height of 2m31, breaking the old record of
2m23 set by Liu Yang (China) in 2004. Barshim Mutaz Essa is a young
athlete from Qatar who is expected to be ranked in the list of the world’s
top athletes in the coming years. The second record was set by Lee Yen Lin
(Taiwan – China) in men’s 110m hurdle with 13.90s compared to the old
record of 14.05s set by Shi Dongpeng (China) in Brunei in 2001. These
talented athletes show the strong development as well as the unceasing
improvements of professional level Asian athletics.nbsp;
The 14th Asian Junior Athletics Championship 2010
marked the great progress of Vietnam’s athletics. As expected, Tran Hue
Hoa, a high-jumper from Ho Chi Minh City who was born in 1992, did her
utmost to capture a silver medal with the height of 1m76 while she suffers
an injury. She was ranked second after her strongest rival, Wu Meng Chia
(Taiwan – China) who won the gold medal with the height of 1m78. Vietnam
won a silver medal in 4 x 400m relay, and two bronze medals in women’s
800m run and women’s 3,000m hurdles by athletes Do Thi Thao and Nguyen Thi
Thu Huong. Athlete Bui Thi Thu Thao also brought the country one bronze
medal in women’s heptathlon. These medals were praiseworthy and it is
expected that young Vietnamese athletes will obtain higher achievements in
other continental tournaments.
