“The Charm of Vietnam”

“The Charm of Vietnam” is the title of a book of photographs published by VNP photojournalist Hoang Minh Quoc. It is also the name of his private exhibition held at the representative office of the Vietnam News Agency, 116 – 118 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Ho Chi Minh City.

Photojournalist Hoang Minh Quoc, or Minh Quoc, his pen-name, was born in 1960 in Tra Vinh Province. He has worked as a photojournalist for Vietnam Pictorial since 2004. He likes to travel and record images in every region of the country. Thanks to the sharp thoughts of a journalist and the sensitivity of a photographer, he has successfully recorded many press photos published in Vietnam Pictorial and other newspapers.
“The Charm of Vietnam” is the fruit of photojournalist Hoang Minh Quoc’s labour after many years of traveling to every corner of the country to record beautiful moments and landscapes. The 242 page book with 227 photos is a mosaic of Vietnam and its people with captions in three languages: Vietnamese, English and French.
Through this book, viewers can experience an interesting journey across Vietnam from the North with the thousand-year-old capital - Hanoi along with Sa Pa and Ha Long Bay. It has photos of the Central region with various cultural and natural heritages and then on to bustling Ho Chi Minh City and the peaceful Mekong River delta. All can be seen as a panorama of Vietnam.
When looking at these photos, viewers seem to be a part of the scenery of mountains and forests in the Northwest, immense golden rice fields in the Red River delta, the sea in the Central region and canals in watery areas in the South. They can appreciate the life of ethnic people in mountainous areas with women in their colourful, traditional costumes who carry their children or goods on their backs.

Many of these photos are displayed at his private photo exhibition with five major themes, including the Northwest-Northeast, Hanoi, the Central region, Ho Chi Minh City and the Cuu Long River Delta. The exhibition also introduces 59 press photos that reflect truthful moments of life without the intervention and arrangement of the artist or Photoshop. With this exhibition, Hoang Minh Quoc wants to review the process of engaging in the press and hopes to start a new stage in his career.
According to Hoang Minh Quoc, money received from sales of his photos at the exhibition will be donated to the fund “For the Pain of Agent Orange” of the Vietnam News Agency. It is of great significance for the Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange since Vietnam will organise the 50th anniversary of the day Agent Orange was dropped in Vietnam (August 10, 1961).
