Vietnam is strengthening ocean protection through plastic waste reduction, a sustainable blue economy, and marine conservation to safeguard ecosystems.
In the face of mounting challenges from climate change, plastic pollution, and the overexploitation of marine resources, ocean protection has become essential to safeguarding the planet’s future. For Vietnam, a country with more than 3,260 kilometers of coastline, healthy marine ecosystems are closely linked to economic development, food security, and cultural identity.
In recent years, Vietnam has implemented a wide range of marine environment protection programmes aimed at restoring ocean ecosystems and promoting sustainable development. A central focus has been reducing ocean plastic pollution. Nationwide campaigns encourage the collection and recycling of plastic waste, particularly in coastal areas and on islands, while initiatives to limit single-use plastics have gained growing public support.

At the same time, Vietnam is advancing a sustainable blue economy that balances economic growth with environmental protection. This strategy prioritizes responsible fisheries management, eco-friendly aquaculture, marine renewable energy, and sustainable coastal tourism. These sectors not only reduce pressure on marine resources but also help improve livelihoods for coastal communities.

Strengthening patrols and monitoring of aquatic resources is another key pillar of Vietnam’s marine conservation efforts. Authorities have stepped up inspections to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, while applying digital technologies to track fishing vessels and protect sensitive marine habitats.

Public awareness and environmental education also play a vital role. Through community-based initiatives, school programmes, and media campaigns, citizens are encouraged to adopt environmentally responsible behavior and recognize the importance of conserving marine and island ecosystems.
Together, these efforts highlight Vietnam’s growing commitment to ocean conservation. By combining policy action, community engagement, and sustainable economic models, the country is working toward healthier seas—ensuring that marine ecosystems continue to support biodiversity, livelihoods, and cultural heritage for generations to come.
