The record holder of volunteer work

Thirty seven-year-old Chau Thanh Toan has spent 22 years volunteering in Ho Chi Minh City. He is always willing to support people in need at any time of the day or night.

Toan began collecting waste and scraps in the surrounding areas when he was 15. Toan spent the money he made from collecting to help poor students. He also removed paint from the streets and joined a team to keep traffic moving in crowded places.

During his high-school years, Toan maintained his volunteer activities. He connected with his friends and senior volunteers to open classes for orphans and unfortunate children.

Toan now is a health worker at the medical station in Da Kao ward, district 1, Ho Chi Minh City.

When Toan was a student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry, he  worked as a leader of many groups in student campaigns such as Mua he xanh (Green Summer) and Xuan tinh nguyen (Volunteer Spring). Toan has also been head of the SV07 volunteer group of the Tay Ninh Red Cross organization which has 20-30 members, mostly students from different universities.

In March 2020, Chau Thanh Toan was listed as one among the people who have spent the most time volunteering by the Vietnam Record Association and the Vietnam Records Organization. On the occasion, Toan also published a book about his volunteer work which inspired a lot of young people.
According to Toan, volunteering is as simple as sharing with poor patients or listening to the life stories of the unfortunate. Toan said that more students joined the group as the years passed and they have been trying to support people in need.

With his enthusiasm and the ideas about “giving away without getting back”, Toan has spent the most beautiful time of his life doing volunteer work. Among numerous activities to collect funds for the poor and unfortunate, Toan and other volunteers sing on the streets. He said the work makes his life more meaningful.
