Phu Quoc is boosting construction of its infrastructure ahead of the 2027 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week with 21 projects to build or upgrade roads, airport, power and water supply systems, and conference facilities. Its vision is to become a world class destination after the international event.
With over 137 trillion dong (nearly 5.2 billion US dollars) in total investment, the projects are designed not only to serve the 2027 event but also to strengthen Phu Quoc’s position as a world-class destination.

These projects are moving ahead around the clock to meet construction deadlines. At Phu Quoc International Airport construction site, engineers and workers are working three shifts a day to complete work items serving APEC 2027, including digital infrastructure and transformation, and satellite urban areas.
The accelerated construction reflects the government’s guideline of “wasting no single day” in the project implementation as investment in Phu Quoc is seen not just for a single event but a long-term strategy for the island.

By mid-August, all 21 projects had their investors or contractors selected. Five are ahead of schedule, namely the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport; technical infrastructure and a smart operations center; the Bai Dat Do (Ruby Beach) mixed-use urban area; the Nui Ong Quan ecotourism urban area; and the Cua Can Reservoir water plant.
Thousands of engineers and workers are working around the clock to turn blueprints into modern infrastructure in Phu Quoc. Together with major constructions, work at other facilities serving daily operations on the island is also being accelerated, with the completion of the Phu Quoc 220kV transformer station and the 110kV Phu Quoc - South Phu Quoc transmission line in August.
The new facilities will not only serve APEC 2027 but also provide a stronger power supply for the island’s tourism, services and urban development.
APEC 2027 is an opportunity for Phu Quoc to show off its potential, taking advantage of the event to attract tourists and long-term foreign investment.

Green tourism, green infrastructure, green transport and green governance are being developed together with construction. The island’s growth should go hand in hand with its protection of forests, marine ecosystems, coral reefs and biodiversity, and the combination of local culture and ecotourism to offer diverse experiences for visitors.
The expanded Phu Quoc International Airport will serve as a key gateway for international visitors and delegates. The island also plans to use the APEC opportunity to develop MICE tourism and strengthen its international brand. By 2030, it aims to train about 20,000 workers, including 5,000 with green skills.
An expanded airport, new roads, upgraded power and water systems, and modern conference facilities will serve Phu Quoc long after the summit, providing a new growth momentum for the island, especially in tourism, services and urban development.
The success of APEC 2027 will therefore extend beyond hosting the event to efficiently using new facilities, protecting its natural and cultural resources and turning them into sustainable economic values.
From busy construction sites, a new Phu Quoc is taking shape. APEC 2027 will be an important diplomatic milestone of the country, but at the same time may open a new chapter for Phu Quoc as an international tourism destination.
