OVOP Vietnam - The “Play Ground” for Craft Villages

The movement “One Village, One Product” (OVOP) originated from Japan and has spread to most countries in ASEAN. In Vietnam, Hanoi has taken the lead in this movement with the organisation of an exhibition entitled “OVOP Vietnam”.
“The OVOP (One Village, One Product) movement which was initiated by Oita Governor Morihiko Hiramatsu in 1979 is a special and significant model. When participating in the model, each community will select one type of product to make with high added value which helps improve the living standards of the villagers."
The “OVOp Vietnam” exhibition held recently in the precinct of the Ly Thai To Monument provided an opportunity for craft villages in Hanoi to introduce their unique handmade products to tourists and domestic and foreign exporters and importers. For hundreds of years, Hanoi has been well-known as “the land of hundreds of crafts”. The craft villages have not only contributed to preserving and promoting the national tradition and culture, but also served as a specialised economic model, giving a high income to locals. At present, in the context of globalisation when crafted products need to be promoted internationally, the organisation of the exhibition was of great significance.

At the exhibition, there were 40 stalls which displayed beautiful and high-class fine art pieces made of different materials, such as lacquer, rattan and bamboo, pottery, embroidery, wood, horn, glass and other products which are diverse in styles and sizes, meeting the different tastes of domestic and foreign customers.

The exhibition not only highlighted the traditional craft villages’creativity in product promotion, but also helped strengthen and expand trade activities, trigger tourism and increase the competiveness of products.

For enterprises, the exhibition opened opportunities for investment and cooperation between domestic and foreign partners. Through the exhibition, foreign customers, importers and distributors could find products branded “OVOP” Vietnam.
There are three basic principles for the development of OVOP, including local action and global thinking; confidence-creativeness and human resource development. It depends on concrete circumstances and conditions, each locality will bring into full play its strength to focus on one typical product.  The “OVOP” model is evaluated suitable to agricultural countries which have many craft villages like Vietnam.
