Born Nguyen Van Cuc on July 1, 1915 in Yen Phu Village, Giai Pham Commune, Yen My District, Hung Yen Province. During his 70 years of revolutionary activities, Nguyen Van Linh was assigned many critically important tasks. He was wholeheartedly devoted to the Party and the people and fulfilled any of the demands made of him.
He was elected Party General Secretary at the 6th National Party Congress in December 1986 and became the first Party leader to lead and organise the implementation of the Party resolution on Doi moi, which marked a historic turning point in Vietnam’s revolutionary cause. He and the Politburo and the Party Central Committee worked very hard to devise a sound and creative policy suitable to the reality of Vietnam that helped the Doi moi process reap important achievements; implement two strategic tasks of national construction and defence and social-economic development; and create firm foundations for the country to develop quickly in the future.
Delivering a speech at the ceremony, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong emphasised that the celebration provided a chance to recall the life and cause of a staunch and prestigious communist and an outstanding student of President Ho Chi Minh.
