Heavy rains, with some areas receiving more than 250 mm, have left soils in parts of northern and north-central Vietnam nearly saturated, raising the risk of flash floods and landslides as more rain is forecast for September 17, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Moderate to heavy rain, locally accompanied by thunderstorms and downpours, was reported overnight and early on September 17 in Phu Tho, Hanoi, Hung Yen, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, as well as southern parts of Lao Cai, Son La, Tuyen Quang and Thai Nguyen.

 

The weather service warned that intense rainfall could trigger flash floods in low-lying areas and landslides in mountainous areas. Local authorities and residents in vulnerable areas are advised to closely monitor weather developments and take precautions.
