Hanoi ensures safe food production during COVID-19 outbreak

During the 4th coronavirus wave, Hanoi's agricultural industry has taken the initiative and many effective measures to ensure safe food from production to consumption.
From the beginning of 2021, during the complicated situation of the COVID-19 pandemic globally, to ensure food security, Hanoi's agricultural industry planned a high-tech agricultural production area including 35 rice-growing areas, 104 vegetable-growing areas, 56 fruit-tree areas, 66 aquaculture areas, 48 major pig-raising areas, 15 major dairy cow breeding areas, 39 major beef cattle areas, 60 livestock breeding areas, 48 concentrated breeding areas, and 3,800 large-scale livestock farms outside residential areas.

In addition, the industry estimated the monthly consumption of essential goods for Hanoi’s population of 10.5 million people as follows, 94,500 tons of rice (self-sufficient capacity of 56,338 tons); 18,900 tons of pork (self-sufficient capacity of 17,500 tons); 6,153 tons of beef (self-sufficiency capacity of 896 tons); 6,300 tons of poultry (self-sufficiency 12,700 tons); 5,250 tons of fresh and frozen seafood (self-sufficiency 9,080 tons); 5,250 tons of processed foods (925 tons of self-sufficiency); 105,000 tons of vegetables (self-sufficient capacity of 67,299 tons); 52,000 tons of fruit (self-sufficiency meets 35% of demand); 126 million eggs (self-sufficient capacity of 117 million eggs).

Apart from the local source of products, the city has strengthened cooperation with other provinces and cities to receive agricultural products. The Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development with 21 provinces and cities in the Coordination Committee of Safe Meat and Vegetable Supply Chain for Hanoi city built and developed 786 safe food supply chains, including 253 chains certified by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. In the first four months of 2021, distribution channels, supermarkets, and food chains in Hanoi supported the consumption of goods from other provinces and cities reaching 43,000 tons, valued at 550 billion dong.

Especially, Hanoi has supported the consumption of agricultural and aquatic products in areas affected heavily by the COVID-19 pandemic by a variety of distribution channels, such as over 130 tons of Hai Duong hill chicken, over 13,000 tons of vegetables, fruits, and aquatic products of Hai Duong, Quang Ninh, Ha Giang, and Soc Trang provinces…”,

Currently, Hanoi has 29 trade centers; 127 supermarkets mainly concentrated in inner-city districts; 458 markets, including 2 wholesale markets for agricultural products and many wholesale markets; over 1,800 convenience stores, 786 safe fruit stores and over 128 chains of agricultural products keeping operations that meet the demand of consumers.

Hanoi's agricultural industry has continued to maintain and develop chains of safe production and consumption with 141 chains, including 56 animal product chains and 85 plant product chains. The chains have attracted many businesses, cooperatives, and farmer households such as Ba Vi chicken, Soc Son chicken, Son Tay chicken, Van Dinh duck, Dai Thanh longan and Boi Khe rice to participate in a chain building cooperation.

In addition, to strengthen measures to ensure food safety, the Hanoi Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department has strengthened inspection, detection, and prevention violations of quality and food safety according to the law. Since the beginning of the year, the department has slapped fines of 655 million dong for 19 food safety violations.
