Ha Tinh police launch criminal proceedings against illegal migration brokerage

Police in the central province of Ha Tinh on October 31 decided to start criminal proceedings against a case of organising and brokering illegal emigration in the locality under Article 349 of the Penal Code.

Colonel Nguyen Tien Nam, head of the Ha Tinh Police’s Investigation Security Agency, said initial evidence showed that there are brokerage services to send labourers overseas to work or stay illegally.

Earlier on October 23, the UK police found 30 dead people in a container truck in Essex in northeast London.

Upon hearing the news, several families in Ha Tinh reported to local authorities that they had lost contact with their relatives who were on the way to the UK.

Authorities are collecting DNA samples from the families to send to the UK for verification.

According to the provincial Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, the province had more than 72,000 people working abroad under fixed-term contracts between 2009 and 2019.

About 6,600 local workers on average have gone overseas to work each year.
