In early October, Thanh Yen border commune in Dien Bien Province is entering the peak harvest season for winter melon, bringing a welcome boost to local farmers’ incomes. The crop has become increasingly popular in the area thanks to its relatively stable market price and good productivity.

The commune currently has about 50ha under winter melon cultivation, with an average yield of around 100 tons per hectare. During the harvest season, farmers work in the fields from early morning to pick, sort, and transport the melons for sale.

Compared with several traditional crops, winter melon offers higher economic returns and has become an effective option for diversifying local agricultural production. Its growing popularity also reflects farmers’ efforts to adapt their cultivation practices to market demand and make better use of available farmland.

For Thanh Yen, a border commune where agriculture remains an important source of income, the winter melon crop provides more than a seasonal harvest. It contributes to improving household incomes, creating additional livelihood opportunities, and supporting local agricultural restructuring.

With favorable growing conditions and stable demand, winter melon is expected to remain an important crop for local farmers, helping improve livelihoods and promote sustainable agricultural development in Dien Bien’s border area.
