Can Tho Proactively Preserves Freshwater Resources to Face El Nino Challenge

The threat of El Niño in late 2026 and early 2027 has raised concerns about water security in Can Tho. Like other localities in the Mekong Delta, the city needs to take proactive measures to cope with potential water shortages, saltwater intrusion and increasingly erratic weather patterns across the Mekong River basin.

Ensuring sufficient water for daily life, agricultural production and industrial activities is a key priority. Can Tho needs to strengthen the monitoring of water resources, improve the efficiency of water supply systems and develop plans to manage drought and saltwater intrusion. Local authorities must also coordinate closely with neighboring provinces to regulate water resources and respond promptly to changing conditions.

In rural areas, efficient irrigation systems, water storage facilities and measures to reduce water loss can help farmers maintain production during dry periods. Public awareness campaigns are also important in encouraging households and businesses to use water economically and protect local water sources.

As climate change and extreme weather events put increasing pressure on the Mekong Delta, long-term solutions are essential. By improving water resource management, upgrading infrastructure and strengthening regional cooperation, Can Tho aims to enhance its resilience to drought and saltwater intrusion while ensuring a stable water supply for residents and sustainable development across the city.
