Award-winning scientist for hypercholesterolemia

Associate Professor Truong Thanh Huong, from the Vietnam National Heart Institute at Bach Mai hospital, has been given Vietnam’s 2020 Kovalevskaya Award for her scientific study "Build up a map of familial hypercholesterolemia mutations and propose a model familial hypercholesterolemia’s management in Vietnam". The study’s results have been transferred to medical facilities to protect and care for the people’s health.
Truong Thanh Huong was one of the first cardiovascular residents who graduated from Hanoi Medical University with excellent results. After graduation in 1987, she started to work as a lecturer at the university and as a cardiologist at the Vietnam National Heart Institute, Bach Mai hospital. Then she continued to study at the Paris-VI Pierre and Marie Curie University, and to practice at the Saint-Antoine Hospital and the Robert Debré Hospital, France.

Dr Huong has conducted studies for 6 state-level projects, 3 ministerial-level projects, and 7 medical university-hospital level projects. She is also the editor and co-author of 20 medical textbooks and documents and has published 75 scientific articles in domestic and international journals on the cardiovascular topic.

Her most outstanding scientific study is the project "Build up a map of familial hypercholesterolemia mutations and propose a model familial hypercholesterolemia’s management in Vietnam". The study has benefited nearly 500,000 patients with familial hypercholesterolemia in Vietnam. They would be aided by the application of building disease detection and management processes in the community and at health facilities.

Dr Huong is also a senior lecturer at the Hanoi Medical University. She has worked as a linking investigator between the Vietnamese health industry and the world through her contributions to scientific research and creative cooperation with scientists and major scientific corporations such as France, the USA, Australia and Japan.

Dr Huong was given the Vietnam’s Scientific and Technological Innovation Award in 2012 for her tireless efforts in scientific research. In 2014, Dr Huong was awarded the Third Class Labor Medal by the State with excellent achievements for her work. In 2016, she was awarded the Certificate of Merit by the Prime Minister for her achievements, contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland.

The greatest joy of a doctor is to treat patients, and the joy of a scientist is to bring his or her research to applications in the community. The joy of a lecturer is to share and pass on their experiences in life as a doctor to the younger generation. Dr. Huong has been having a lot of joy.
