St. Giong Festival honoured by UNESCO

  • Katherine Muller Marin, UNESCO Chief Representative in Vietnam, presents UNESCO’s Certificate to recognize St. Giong Festival as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity to a representative of Hanoi People’s Committee.
  • St. Giong Festival is a big and unique event to commemorate Saint Giong, one of four immortal saints according to the Vietnamese folk belief.
  • St. Giong Festival has been preserved and handed down from generation to generation, which expresses a desire of a prosperous life for each family and of peace for the country and the world over.
  • St. Giong Festival is annually held in many locations in Hanoi and its surrounding areas, of which the St. Giong Festival at Soc Temple is the biggest one (it is believed that Soc Temple is the place where Saint Giong flew to Heaven after defeating the invaders), during the 6th – 8th day of lunar January.
  • St. Giong Festival at Phu Dong Temple in Gia Lam District (Hanoi) (where Saint Giong was born) takes place during the 8th – 9th day of lunar April, with unique folk performances.
  • A martial art performance at St. Giong Festival.
  • A reproduction of the Signal-flag Officer marching to the front to fight the invaders.
  • Phu Dong villagers are happy at news of St. Giong Festival being recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
