No more cheap fares for air travellers during Tet


Air travel during Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday 2019 will be more expensive as flight tickets for the year’s biggest holiday are surging rapidly.

Survey on online ticketing channels of three domestic airlines shows that on January 20, 2019 (15th of the 12th lunar month), Vietjet Air’s airfares from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi are priced at 1.26 million dong (exclusive of taxes and fees), while from January 27, 2019 (23rd of the 12th lunar month), the price has risen to 2.4-2.8 million dong (roughly 3-3.5 million dong tax-inclusive).

On the same route, Vietnam Airlines charges between 3.59-5.73 million dong (tax-inclusive) during Tet while Jetstar Pacific maintains the price of between over 2.9 and nearly 4 million dong (tax-inclusive) from 23rd of the 12th lunar month till the lunar New Year’s Eve. Overall, airfares during Tet holiday 2019 are 2-3 times the normal fare.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV), between the end of 2018 and early 2019, especially during Tet holiday which lasts from February 2-10, the number of passengers is estimated to rise 14% over the same period last year. The number of operating aircrafts during the Lunar New Year will also be increased from 154 to 186, up 20% from the current schedule.
