International employment law conference opens in Hanoi

Hanoi, August 14 (VNA) – The 9 th LAWASIA Employment Law Conference opened in Hanoi on August 14 under the theme “Free Trade Agreements and Transnational Employment – Legal Issues and Implications”.

The two-day event is being organised by the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific (LAWASIA) with assistance from the Vietnam Bar Federation (VBF), bringing together about 50 experienced jurists from Vietnam and the Asia-Pacific region.

In his remarks at the conference, Deputy Minister of Justice Nguyen Khanh Ngoc said Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) liberalise transnational trade of service and investment which always come along with the free cross-border movement of labour, especially skilled workers.

It has become a challenge for any government joining FTAs, he added, hoping that the conference would provide an insight into the impacts of labour market access commitments on FTA members.

This is the first time the annual LAWASIA Employment Law Conference has been held in Vietnam since the country’s VBF officially became a LAWASIA member in July 2010, VBF Vice President Do Ngoc Thinh said.

The two-day event will focus its discussion on a number of key issues, including FTA impacts on regional employment, immigration issues in transnational employment, employment obligations in host countries, liability for workplace injuries to transnational employees and cross-border taxation, during seven working sessions.

LAWASIA is an international organisation of legal associations, individual lawyers, judges, legal academics and others, which focuses on the interests and concerns of the legal profession in the Asia Pacific region.

Established in 1966, it comprises over 40 member organisations and individual members from more than 50 countries worldwide./
