An Indian billionaire couple has had a four-day luxurious wedding on Phu Quoc island, inviting about 700 guests.

Grrom Rushang Shah and his bride Kaabia Grewal tied the knot at the five-star resort JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay in an 11-event wedding ceremony, which lasted from March 7 to 10.

The event was an opportunity for the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang, which houses the island, to promote wedding party tourism.

Local authorities worked with the Vietnamese Embassy in India to facilitate administrative procedures for the couple and their guests. The province also sent the newlyweds Phu Quoc pearl chains as a gift.

Le Van Chuyen, deputy head of the provincial Department of Information and Communications, said more Indian couples have booked their wedding on the island for this year and the following year.

Located 46km from the mainland, Phu Quoc is famous for pristine beaches, pearl farming, fish sauce, pepper and “ruou sim”, a wine made from sim fruit or Rose Myrtle.

In 2018, the island welcomed more than 4 million tourists, a year-on-year rise of some 36 percent.
