HCM City launches Measles, Rubella vaccination programme

HCM City, September 10 (VNA) – Approximately 1.3 million children in Ho Chi Minh City between the ages of 1 and 14 will be vaccinated against measles and rubella as part of a 2014-2015 vaccination campaign launched by the City’s Health Department.

The two-month campaign, at a total cost of 7.2 billion VND (3.4 million USD), is split into three phases, with the first launched in September for children between 11-14 years old (junior high school students).

The second phase will run from November to December targetting primary school students (6-10 years old), while the final round for 1-5 year-olds will take place in January 2015.

In addition, the municipal Health Department has also tightened its epidemic prevention and control measures in the face of contagious diseases, such as dengue fever, HFMD (hand, foot and mouth disease), diphtheria and the Ebola virus.

In a meeting of the Steering Committee for Epidemic Prevention and Control in early July, the Ministry of Health presented its new Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign targetting children from 1-14 years of age starting in September.

As many as 5,031 cases of measles were recorded in Vietnam in the first half of 2014.
