First foreign-funded power project in North Vietnam inaugurated

Lao Cai, June 8 (VNA) – The Lao Cai Renewable Energy JSC (LCRE) on June 8 inaugurated t he Coc San hydro-electricity plant, the first foreign-funded power project in North Vietnam.

Located in Bat Xat and Sa Pa districts in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai, the 29.7 MW plant was built at a cost of 50 million USD invested by Infraco Asia, a Singaporean-based company .

All the three turbines of the plant were connected to the national grid on April 29, expected to contribute 120 million kWh of electricity annually. The plant is offering 130,000 locals access to sustainable power at affordable costs.


Vietnam’s demand for electricity grows about 15 percent on an annual average, with hydropower accounting for 44 percent of the national electricity output.
