Congratulations offered to ethnic Khmers on New Year festival

Tra Vinh, April 9 (VNA) – The Steering Committee for the Southwest Region led by its Deputy Head Lieutenant General Tran Phi Ho met and congratulated Khmer ethnic groups in the southern province of Tra Vinh on April 8 on their traditional New Year Chol Chnam Thmay.

He visited the provincial Patriotic Clergy Solidarity Association, the Pai–Khmer vocational college, Khmer pagodas and families of Khmer veteran revolutionaries.

In 2014, Tra Vinh spent over 135 billion VND (6.2 million USD) from the State and provincial budget on upgrading infrastructure, providing housing for the poor and generating jobs for local Khmers.

The same day, another delegation from the committee presented gifts to pagoda leaders, impoverished households and social welfare beneficiaries.

On the occasion, the southern province of Soc Trang convened a gathering of key Khmer officials.

The number of Khmer Party members currently reaches nearly 5,000, or over 15 percent of the total in the locality.
