ASEAN countries to tighten cooperation in sci-tech development

Bangkok, November 1 (VNA/NNT) –Thailand is aiming to push forward scientific studies and innovations while the Philippines and Malaysia pledged to sponsor science and technology drives with Thailand.

The information was released by Thai Science and Technology Minister Pichet Durongkaveroj, who recently attended the Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology and the Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science and Technology in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

He said that the committee had agreed to establish the ASEAN Open Innovation and Entrepreneurship Platform to promote freedom of movement among professionals and practitioners of science, technology, innovations, as well as research and development activities between ASEAN member states.

The meeting also approved the ASEAN Talent Mobility project proposed by Thailand, which aims to increase participation of researchers in industrial sector and private ASEAN firms and agreed to conduct a study to find challenges and opportunities arising from the fourth Industrial Revolution or the so-called Industry 4.0.

The proposal on certification scheme for professionals and practitioners in science, technology, and innovation fields in ASEAN has also been approved, with all member states vowing to push forward concrete outcomes of this cooperation in bid to help strengthen the community.

Thailand earlier announced it would allocate 1 million USD in funding for ASEAN science and technology activities, for which the Philippines and Malaysia have agreed to provide additional financial support.
