ASEAN Community formation top priority at 26th ASEAN Summit

Hanoi, April 24 (VNA) – The formation of the ASEAN Community by the end of this year will be the top priority at the 26th ASEAN Summit, which will take place in Kuala Lumpur and on Langkawi Island, Kedah state, from April 26-27.

Malaysian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anifah Aman told reporters at a news conference held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on April 24 that ASEAN leaders will focus on developments towards the establishment of the ASEAN Community, the bloc’s post-2015 vision and a course of actions in upcoming years to move the region to a new level.

The leaders will also exchange opinions on current issues in the region and in the world, Aman said, adding that the East Sea issue will be discussed in detail at both ministerial and head of State levels.

In addition, the Summit is to mention the threat from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) and seek solutions for issues concerning Rohingya ethnic minorities in Myanmar, he added.

The Summit is the year’s first meeting of ASEAN leaders to discuss the association’s agenda and priorities in 2015.
