“Moon Garden”, the first modern dance combined with the art of circus performance, was recently introduced to the public. The dance was staged by choreographer Quach Phuong Hoang and performed by the Modern Lime Dance Group (LDG).
The dance tells a romantic story about statues in a garden when night falls. Under the moon light, the statues change into characters in fairy tales and dance together to share their happiness, love, loneliness and sorrow. Their bodies mingle with each other and dissolve in the twinkling night as stars appear and disappear under clouds in the whisper of wind.

The body’s lissomness of the dancers creates new-fangled dancing movements.

A harmonious coordination of the dancers creates the beauty of the dance.

“Moon Garden” also depicts daily activities, such as at a bus station in Hanoi.

The “Moon Garden” dance fascinates the audience with its uniqueness and novelty. |
To highlight the beauty of dancers’ body as well as the content of the story, choreographer Quach Phuong Hoang, who worked for ten years in France and co-operated with many famous foreign dance groups like L’esquisse, Coline and Montavo Hervieu, focused on each detail of the arrangement of props, stage, light and music. This creates an artistic “Moon Garden” space, full of the breath of life through birds’ songs and sounds of transport. Therefore, audiences could comprehend the content of the story through alluring performances of the dancers.
To successfully stage this special dance, choreographer Hoang researched and applied many techniques of circus performances to create precise and flexible dancing movements. The unique combination between dance and circus in the “Moon Garden” is considered a new experiment for the modern dance of choreographer Hoang.
The success of the dance is also partly attributed to the spectacular performance of the Modern Lime Dance Group with five young circus artists, including Duc Thinh, Luu Huong, Hong Hao, Khac Thanh and Doan Vinh.
