WEF ASEAN 2017 and Vietnam’s Initiatives

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc conveyed important messages in his speeches delivered at the 26th World Economic Forum on ASEAN (WEF ASEAN 2017) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from May 11-12, 2017. He said that Vietnam is determined to boost comprehensive reforms and economic restructuring, improve  the business climate and encourage start-ups, creativity and innovation.  He also spoke about important initiatives to promote common development of the ASEAN bloc despite the unfavourable global situation.
Addressing the sessions, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasised that the dynamic development of ASEAN has offered favourable opportunities for businesses, including Vietnam as a dynamic area with a GDP increasing 6% per year during the past 30 years and reached the average growth target of 6.5-7% from 2017 to 2020.

As a member of ASEAN, he said that the nation has significant potential in creativity and innovation with a plentiful and young population with 60% under 35 years old and about 52% using the internet. Vietnam also has pushed international integration through  FTAs, including high-standard FTAs toward a unified ASEAN market.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc proposed setting up a working group to study and put forth policies on education, vocational training and startup promotions and to encourage businesses to invest in startup initiatives for ASEAN youth.

At a seminar on Vietnam, the Vietnamese leader noted that Vietnam is determined to build a development facilitating government and affirmed its policies on the development of the private economic sector to become an important driving force in the domestic economy.  He wants to push improvement of institutions, create favourable condition for enterprises and people, especially the younger generation taking advantage of the fourth Industrial Revolution. He also wants to make education prosper, and develop a start-up spirit with the creativity and dynamism of the nation.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc hopes that international enterprises and investors will cooperate with Vietnam for mutual benefit and success.

As the host of APEC 2017, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc welcomed delegates to participate and respond to activities of Vietnam APEC Year 2017 to share ideas and cooperate for the common prosperity of the region.

On the sidelines of the forum, the Vietnamese Prime Minister received and had meetings with heads of organisations and large groups in the region and the world, including WEF Managing Director Philipp Roesler; Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s (AIIB) President Jin Liqun, Global Director of Cisco Goh Seow Hiong; President of Asia Pacific Selling and Market Operations of Procter & Gamble  Magesvaran Surajan; Asia-Pacific Regional Head of Group Government Affairs with the UK’s HSBC Doreen Steidle; Vice President of Ireland’s Shire Plc Linda Seah and Vice President of the GE group Christian Bennett.
