Hanoi, July 7 (VNA)- As part of activities during his visit to the US, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong met with US Trade Representative Michael Froman on July 6 in Washington D.C. (local time) to discuss orientations to enhance trade ties between the two countries.
During the meeting, the Vietnamese leader affirmed the Vietnamese Party and State’s consistent policy of promoting international integration and expressed his hope that Vietnam-US trade links would expand and deepen.
He stressed Vietnam’s efforts to integrate into the regional and global economy, citing Vietnam’s involvement in the negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement as an example. He asked the US to support Vietnam in the negotiation process.
The General Secretary expressed his hope that the US would expand its market for Vietnamese goods and recognise Vietnam’s market economy.
For his part, Froman said he believes that Vietnam-US relations and trade ties will be fostered by the Vietnamese leader’s visit.
He spoke highly of achievements in bilateral economic and trade cooperation after 20 years of normalised Vietnam-US diplomatic ties, highlighting the budding potential for promoting trade links in the future.
The US will continue to work with Vietnam during the country’s development and integration into the global economy, Froman stated.
The US Trade Representative discussed with the Party General Secretary issues related to negotiations of the TPP, commenting that once the agreement is signed, it will bring trade and investment opportunities for all parties including Vietnamese and US businesses and people.
General Secretary Trong affirmed that Vietnam will proactively coordinate with the US to hasten the completion of negotiations on the pact.
In the afternoon of the same day, the Vietnamese leader attended a ceremony to hand over the new-generation plane Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from the US Boeing Group to Vietnam Airlines at Ronald Reagan Airport in Washington DC.
The event marked Vietnam Airlines’ fleet expansion, turning the firm into the first Asian airline using the two modern planes Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and Airbus A350-900 XWB.
On the occasion, Vietnam Airlines and Boeing signed a cooperation agreement to expand the Vietnamese airline’s operations.
Representatives from the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade and the US Department of Commerce concurred that closer links between the two nations’ airlines will contribute to forging stronger and more effective links in economics, trade, investment and tourism.
Previously, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and his entourage visited the Thomas Jefferson Memorial in Washington DC honouring the third president of the US who was one of America’s Founding Fathers and the primary drafter of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
