Vietnamese leaders send congratulations to Myanmar’s new President

Hanoi, March 18 (VNA) – President Truong Tan Sang and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on March 18 extended their congratulations to newly elected President of Myanmar Htin Kyaw.

In their messages, the Vietnamese leaders said they believe Myanmar will gain further achievements in the nation’s construction and development.

On the same day, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan also cabled congratulatory message to Myint Swe and Henry Van Thio onr their new positions as First and Second Vice Presidents of the country.

Answering reporters’ queries about Vietnam’s stance on Myanmar’s presidential election, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Le Hai Binh said Vietnam congratulates Myanmar on its successful election and believes the new leaders will continue to build Myanmar into a stable and prosperous country.

Vietnam wants to enhance traditional relations and multi-faceted cooperation with Myanmar for the benefit of the two peoples as well as for peace, stability and collaboration in the region, contributing to building a solid and strong ASEAN Community, he said.

Htin Kyaw of the National League for Democracy (NLD) was elected as Myanmar’s President during the country’s presidential election on March 15.

The new President is scheduled to take office on April 1.

According to the voting results, U Myint Swe, Yangon Region Chief Minister, becomes First Vice President. He was a candidate from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and nominated by the military.

Meanwhile, U Henry Van Thio from NLD, elected by the House of Nationalities (Upper House), was voted as Second Vice President.
