Vietnamese Bamboo Bikes

With a master’s degree in the automotive industry from Stuttgart University in Germany, Pham Minh Tri returned to Vietnam to set up his own business of making bikes from bamboo which uses techniques he learned abroad.
Tri had always hoped to return to his home country to contribute building a future that was green, clean and fresh for the younger generation. And he had the idea about bamboo bikes and the desire to turn it into reality. He silently started to do further research about this material, and after eight months he realized the potential hidden in the simple bamboo tree.

According to Tri, the most important factor of a bike is safety. He carefully selected the best bamboo for production. With a densely unidirectional fiber structure, bamboo has an impressive capability to sustain pressure, bending and twisting.  This characteristic enables bamboo bicycles to reduce vibration while riding, especially in case of a pothole, thereby minimising the danger and risks for riders, particularly for young children.

Tri said frames are made from bamboo that has been carefully heated using a carbonization method. This can protect the bamboo from cracking, fungi and insects, enjoying a longer-lasting life than natural bamboo.

All bamboo tubes are then joined and bound with epoxy resins soaked in carbon fibers, glass fibers or hemp to create a frame whose most notable quality besides beauty is the incredible vibration reduction. It takes 35-40 hours to make one bike frame.

After making the first bike, Tri put his product in a trial phase for a long time. In mid-2014, his first bamboo bike was sold. After participating in an exhibition in 2015, a German company ordered 150 bamboo bikes. Tri’s bikes then gradually were sold in other markets such as France, Switzerland, Australia, and Japan with prices ranging from 300 – 1,500 US dollars.
For his bamboo bikes, Tri received a certificate of the bicycle frame’s quality in accordance with GSS’ ISO 4210 standards.

The environmentally friendly bikes have an artistic look.

Viet Bamboo bikes are now available in many countries.

The product attracted many people for its environmentally friendly material, but also because of its beautiful and fashionable look.

Recently, in some bike models, Tri uses a belt drive mechanism instead of a regular chain drive, which improves the comfort.
