Vietnam – US: Strengthening the Comprehensive Partnership

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his entourage concluded their US visit from May 29-31 at the invitation of President Donald Trump. The visit helps boost the comprehensive relationship between the two countries, which was established in 2013.
The two sides issued a joint statement enhancing the bilateral comprehensive partnership in a practical, effective and sustainable manner for mutual benefits as well as peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and beyond. They also respect the United Nations Charter and international law, respective political institutions, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

President Donald Trump said that he looks forward to visiting Vietnam in November to attend the APEC Leaders’ Meeting.
During the visit, PM Phuc delivered a speech at the Global Heritage Fund, reiterating Vietnam and the US share common interests in the maintenance of peace, stability, security, cooperation, and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region. Vietnam considers the US as an important partner and wants to further develop the comprehensive relationship with the US.

The two countries agreed to put high premium on economic, trade and investment cooperation toward efficiency and mutual benefits, and continue regarding these fields as key a momentum in their overall relations. They pledged to create the optimal conditions for enterprises to do business.

Both nations also concurred on boosting collaboration in education and training, healthcare, scientific research, technology, outer space, and renovation.

As regards defence and security, Vietnam and the US agreed to continuously carry out exchange activities under the signed Memorandum of Understanding for Advancing Bilateral Defense Cooperation 2011 and the Joint Vision Statement on Defense Relations 2015.

Pertaining to the East Sea matter, the two countries’ leaders stressed the need to settle disputes via peaceful means and diplomatic and legal procedures, on the grounds of respecting international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and toward reaching the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

Assessing the outcome of the visit, Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc said the US visit by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has reaped significant outcomes in key pillars of the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership.

During his trip to the US, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Vietnam’s membership in the organisation. This meaningful event is expected to open up a new development stride in the Vietnam-UN relations.

Vietnam-Australia Ties Become comprehensive Strategic Partnership

After over 50 years of diplomatic relations, Vietnam and Australia have built a solid and comprehensive relationship based on mutual strategic trust and understanding. During the official visit to Australia by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in March, upon the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, both sides announced the upgrade of their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
