Vietnam – Romania Diversify Economic Cooperation


Vietnam and Romania continue expanding and diversifying economic cooperation on some fields, such as trade, energy, banking, agriculture, manufacturing industry, infrastructure and information technology.
Romanian Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos paid an official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc from July 11-14, 2016. During his stay in Vietnam, Romanian Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos had meetings with Vietnamese leaders.
At the meetings, the Romanian Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam is Romania’s important partner in Southeast Asia, and expressed a wish to develop bilateral cooperation in many fields, especially in economics, trade and investment to match potential and demand.
During the talks with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the two sides agreed to further expand and diversify economic cooperation, with a special focus on several key sectors: trade, energy, banking, agriculture, the engineering industry, infrastructure, information technology, environmental protection, climate change and tourism.They also pledged to enhance collaboration in education and training, science and technology, and defense and security. On the occasion, the two nations signed cooperation agreements in culture, education and energy.

Relating to the East Sea issue, they expressed concern over the recent developments and underscored the need to settle disputes by peaceful means in line with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), toward the early formulation of a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC), considering it an effective way to ensure peace, stability, security, maritime and aviation safety and freedom, and trade in the East Sea./.



Vietnam now is a leading trade partner of Romania in the ASEAN bloc. The bilateral trade turnover of the two countries reaches about 170 million dollars/year. Vietnam mainly exports coffee, seafood, garments and textiles, footwear, electronics and computers to Romania and imports wheat flour, machines’ spare parts, and the chemicals and materials of iron and steel from the country.
