Vietnam Funclub – An Interesting Playground

Vietnam Funclub located inside Ho Chi Minh City’s Youth Cultural House (4A, Pham Ngoc Thach Street, District 1) has been a popular rendezvous for active youngsters in the city for over 5 years. It provides services for three games, including ice skating, fencing and archery.
The Ice Skating Club under Vietnam Funclub attracts a lot of attention from the city’s youth as it is the sole place in Ho Chi Minh City that has an ice rink for skating.

Because Vietnam is in a tropical climate zone without natural ice, Anh Hoang - the club’s president - decided to use synthetic ice imported from the US to make and install the ice rink which requires no cooling system to maintain. Other facilities such as high quality ice skates, sticks, helmets, safety vests and the like are also imported to ensure the players’ safety.

Nguyen Tran Hoang Nam, a trainer of the club acknowledged that ice skating was not very difficult. Newcomers only need a couple of minutes to grasp basic skills and from four to five days of practice to be able to perform difficult movements.

Ice skating is very beneficial for one’s health. It requires a quick response to falling or skidding, thus improving the flexibility and increasing the endurance of the body. Ice skating also provides a great workout to help practitioners keep fit.
20-year-old Truong Van Cuong (Binh Tan District) acknowledged that though he had just done ice skating in Vietnam Funclub for 2 months, he had gone roller skating before and applied those experiences to ice skating. 21-year-old Nguyen Tan Hai (a student of the University of Social Sciences) has been practicing the sport for 2 years and can now perform artistically eye-catching and complicated movements thanks to the detailed guidance of trainers and his diligent practice. To date, Hai can give basic guidance to other newcomers to the club.
Not only men but women are interested in practicing the sport, which helps them release stress after working long days. 22-year-old Tran Phan Nhu Y (Binh Thanh District) shared: “At the beginning, I felt it was hard and I was very nervous but now I am used to it, I feel really comfortable and relaxed. This place is a must-go destination for my friends and me on hot summer days.”
Besides ice skating, part of the ice rink there is used for ice hockey playing. This is an exciting team sport that attracts a lot of youngsters.
