Vietnam calls for UNICEF to support policy development

Hanoi, September 5 (VNA) – Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly (NA) Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan asked the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for further assistance in perfecting Vietnam’s legal framework on the protection of children, and in enhancing parliament’s supervision of the implementation of children’s rights.

During a meeting with UNICEF-Vietnam Representative Youssouf Adbel-Jelil in Hanoi on September 5, Ngan praised the effective cooperation between the NA and the organisation, which has helped improve child protection and the implementation of children’s rights.

She thanked UNICEF for its support and highlighted the NA’s commitment to including child-related issues in its law-making process.

The official expressed her hope that UNICEF continue addressing issues of the child in its programmes in Vietnam, including infant mortality, malnutrition, access to clean water, HIV/AIDS and education.

For his part, Youssouf Adbel-Jelil congratulated Vietnam on its accomplishments in protecting and caring for children, as well as its progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

He said UNICEF will continue to help Vietnam develop and implement child-related policies, carry out joint projects, and boost cooperation between the two sides.
