Vietnam – Azerbaijan promote economic cooperation

Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev paid a state-level visit to Vietnam from May 18-20, 2014. During his visit, President Ilham Aliyev held talks with State President Truong Tan Sang, paid a courtesy visit to Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, met with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.
At their meetings, the leaders reached a consensus to push all-around cooperation between Vietnam and Azerbaijan with a focus on economics, trade and investment and agreed to lift annual two-way trade turnover from the modest existing 400 million dollars to 1 billion dollars in the coming years.

The two sides also agreed to strengthen delegation exchange of ministries and sectors, especially economic sectors and enterprises; foster trade between the two nations to expand the market share of Vietnam’s goods in Azerbaijan; make strides to increase the two-way trade turnover to 1 billion dollars in the future.

They emphasised the significance of cooperation in oil and gas which is considered a strategic priority in the long term and promoting bilateral projects. The countries also showed interest in the high-potential fields of light industry and real estate.

The Azerbaijan side vowed to provide Vietnam with legal assistance, making it easier for Vietnamese businesses to invest and to boost investment in their country, while Vietnam would consider the possibility of importing more oil from Azerbaijan and broaden their cooperation as a third country.

During the meeting with Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, regarding the East Sea issue, President Ilham Aliyev was absolutely unanimous on the peaceful settlement of any conflict in line with international law and the UN Charter.

During his stay in Vietnam, Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev laid a wreath at the Martyrs Monument and visited President Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum; witnessed the signing ceremony of an inter-governmental agreement on trade and science-technology, and another on double taxation avoidance and met with former Vietnamese students who studied at universities in Azerbaijana.
